What Claude Code Actually Does

Claude Code is Anthropic's AI coding tool that runs in your desktop app and has direct access to your project files. You describe what you want - 'Add a button that saves the user's email to a list', 'Fix the crash on the profile screen' - and Claude Code writes or edits the code. You do not type the code. You review it, run it, and tell Claude what to fix if it is wrong.

This is not magic - you still need to understand what the app is doing at a high level. But the barrier shifts from 'can you write TypeScript' to 'can you describe what you want and spot when something does not match it'. Most people can do the second thing.

Setting Up Your Environment

Install Node.js, then run npx create-expo-app my-app. Install the Expo Go app on your phone. Run npx expo start in your project folder. Scan the QR code with your phone camera. Your app is running on your real device. No Xcode, no Android Studio, no simulator setup. That is the Expo promise for beginners and it largely delivers.

What You Will Still Need to Learn

Even with Claude Code, some fundamentals help enormously. Understanding what a component is (a reusable piece of UI). What props and state are (data passed in vs data managed internally). How navigation works (Expo Router). What an API call is (fetching data from a server). You do not need to memorize syntax - you need the mental model so you can direct Claude Code accurately.

The Realistic Timeline

A simple utility app (a calculator, a habit tracker, a notes app) is achievable in a weekend for someone with zero prior coding experience using Claude Code. A more complex app with user accounts, a backend, and payments takes a few weeks. Shipping to the App Store takes an additional 1-3 days (Apple Developer account, build, submission, review).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pay for Claude Code?

Claude Code requires an Anthropic subscription (Claude Max at $100/month or $200/month). There is no free tier for Claude Code itself. The cost is significant, so it is worth committing to actually shipping an app before subscribing.

What kind of apps can a non-developer realistically ship?

Utility apps, tools, productivity apps, and niche community apps are all achievable. Apps requiring complex real-time features, heavy custom animations, or deep device hardware integration are harder to build without code knowledge. Start simple.

Can I build for both iPhone and Android at the same time?

Yes. Expo apps run on both platforms from the same codebase. You will need an Android developer account ($25 one-time) in addition to an Apple developer account ($99/year) to submit to both stores.

How do I handle bugs when Claude Code cannot fix them?

Paste the error message into Claude Code with context about what you were trying to do. If it still fails after a few attempts, post in the App Store Launch Club community - another member has likely hit the same issue.
